Whether you're dealing with a customer whose cigar smoke is disrupting other patrons, or a chatterbox seated behind you in a movie theatre, it's useful to have a way to resolve the problem without causing offence of creating a scene. "I was wondering if I asked you really politely, if you might..." By pointing out that you're asking politely you demonstrate that you are respectfully asking a favor. That permits the offending party to comply without loosing face.
