As a customer service strategist and 20 year black belt martial artist, I love this strategy. FBI special agent Larry Carr developed the "Safecatch" system of being over friendly to disarm bank robbers. The premise is being effusively kind to would-be robbers throws them off so much, they rethink the crime and leave. First Mutual Bank, whose employees were trained on the approach, reduced bank robberies by a whopping 45%! If kindness and compassion can literally disarm a bank robber, imagine what it does for frustrated cusomters.
