Ever given someone a compliment that backfired? That's where you say something nice to someone and they interpret it to be insincere flattery. This often happens because the compliment was general in nature. Eg, "You look nice today." to avoid this, rather than offering generalcompliments (or criticisms - for that matter) you'll get better results when you're specific. Eg, "That handbag looks great - it matches your outfit and shoes perfectly." Being more specific has the effect of making you appear to be less of a flatterer, and more of a perceptive, considerate individual.
